Breast Cancer Mammogram - Prevent the Deadly Diagnosis

Not only is breast cancer a nasty word to hear it is a painful condition and frightening, it gets even nastier sounding if your doctor has diagnosed you with the disease. Sadly, although scary, women still choose to avoid initiating a self breast examination on them self. Why do women ignore cancer awareness alerts which point out the vital concerns of catching cancer in its early stage when they know breast cancer can be a fatal condition?

There can only be one reason why decisions of denial that they are cancer free are made and that is because they are too scared that they may actually detect a lump in the process. Is it not best to find a lump the size of pea than that of one which has developed greater in size? Not all breast lumps are cancerous, breast abnormalities should be checked out sooner than later. "Later is a death sentence". Some women in their seventies said they don't have much road ahead so why the need for a self breast examination. Hey blue rinse gals it is very important for your grand kids have you stick around longer and what of your happy birthday 100th telegram off the Queen. Breast screening regardless of age saves lives (70 years plus). Dutch research of over 860,000 women voiced breast screening decreased the number of deaths by 30% after the upper age limit was extended. Cancer risks increase with age so they say; medical experts have been at odds over whether the over-70s should be checked. UK plans involve raising the upper age limit for routine screening from 70 to 73 by 2012. The Netherlands extended its programme to cover women up to 75 in 1998.

Researchers are continuously and tirelessly looking for answers, e.g. Is breast cancer a hereditary issue or an actual cancer having a specific associated link? (Like Lung cancer in relation to smoking) Overcome your panic thoughts of resistance in finding a lump and it may well save your life.

If you are afraid of the unknown as to what is involved with breast screening then there is nothing to worry over. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breasts. The NHS in the United Kingdom breast screen women aged between 50 and 70. A mammogram will be requested if you have breast cancer symptoms, such as a lump. What you can expect when a mammogram is performed is having a radiographer present. He/she will help you to position one breast at a time on a small flat plate, with an X-ray plate under it. Another flat plate will be placed over the breast. Once the machine is activated, the breast is slightly compressed between the two. Compression of the breast makes it easier for the doctor to see things more clearly. A Mammogram in the UK consists of two snapshots: one from above and one from the side. This is a precaution method to ascertain that nothing is missed. Research opinion says taking a 2 view mammogram can increase breast screening cancer detection rate by 25% or more. Simple explained means every 100 cancers picked up with single view mammograms doubles that to 125 with the double view.

Do mammograms cause pain, well uncomfortable is more the word to depict, however this will depend on breast size and pain threshold of the patient. A mammogram will only take a couple of minutes, so any discomfort will not have to endured for long, unlike the pain caused by breast cancer (physical and mental).

Once a mammogram test is complete the doctor will check for any signs of cancer. Results of the mammogram are normally delivered a week or two later, sometimes longer. Developed breast cancers will more times show up clearly on mammograms. However it is not rare for one to go unnoticed because the x-ray showed no sign. Infancy breast cancer may not involve having a lump, patterns yes, which on a mammogram may suggest breast cancer. The medical term calcification means tiny regions of calcium within the breast tissue. Cancer can be detected through the calcium which creates spots and patterns which suggest disease presence. Breast changes are normal but only your doctor is in the position to say these changes are of the non-cancerous pattern type.

Breast Cancer at 28yo?

I am young, 28yo. I have a couple breast cancer symptoms. While, I have no known lumps, I have been informed that because of my age lumps are hard to detect. I am being sent to a breast surgeon. If I have cancer, I want to know early, of course. If the surgeon doesn't offer any reassuring ideas, can I insist on a biopsy? I am not happy about that idea, however I dont want to hear at age 40 that its in an advance stage. At this point Ive had bleeding from my nipple, breast pain and soreness and growth. I went from a size B to a D and Im only a size one. If you have any personal experience to offer, that would be great.
Yes, I realize I am young and if I am diagnosed I will be of only 5% of BC cases but 5% is a number and it does happen and that's simply a number based on diagnoses and again at an early age it is difficult to detect. Anyway, I dont want to sit on my hands, particularly because I was offered no other explanation and early detection is key.

In fact if you have breast cancer you will be one of only 0.1% of breast cancer cases; 5% are under 40, 0.1% are under 30.

But of course, it does happen and I have met someone through breast cancer support networks who was diagnosed at your age.

If you are being sent for tests, then I assume they will do all possible appropriate tests including biopsy.

Because breast cancer is so very rare in young women, many doctors don't take their concerns seriously and don't refer them as emergencies, so it's good that your doctor has responded by referring you.

I know how stressful waiting for tests and results is; I hope your tests show know you have nothing serious to worry about. Good luck

The Hypertension Report - Say Goodbye to High Blood Pressure

$12.89

An estimated 50 million Americans have high blood pressure, often called the silent killer'' because it may not cause symptoms until the patient has suffered serious damage to the arterial system. It raises the risk of heart attacks, strokes, congestive heart failure, kidney damage, dementia and even blindness. That's a laundry list of horrors you want to avoid and so drug treatment should be an easy sell to the public. There is a massive campaign going on to educate the public to the NEW PARADIGM: Early detection means early treatment and cure -- just like with the American Cancer Society and the war on breast cancer. And like the war on breast cancer, it may turn out to just as disappointing. Early drug treatment may not work at all to reduce the mortality rate. It needs to be tried, however, IF they can find drugs that won't do more harm than good. Hypertension treatment is the same regardless of whether the problem is systolic or diastolic or both. But what if they have different mechanisms? Then you will need two drugs, which greatly increases your potential for serious side effects. Diet, exercise, potassium supplements chelation therapy and practically anything but drugs is the way to go in my opinion. We discuss alternatives in this report.

Can you have tests even if you have no symptoms?

I'm a girl and I'm 23 years old, and I was just wondering, am I able to go have tests done to see if I have any type of Cancer, even if I don't have any symptoms?

In recent years I've come to realise just how common Cancer is, not just Cervical or Breast Cancer. And it is very worrying.

By the way I live in Great Britain, I say this because I'm not sure if other places are different when they deal with checks such as these.

So yeah, am I able to get any checks done, just by phoning up my Doctor and saying "Hey, I don't have any symptoms of Cancer, but can I use your Cancer detection machine thingy, to make sure I haven't got it, and if I have early signs, could ya get rid of it for me? Cheers!"

I don't know what your health insurance will pay for, but a lot of tests are done for cancer before you have symptoms. That's kind of the point. However, most of them wont' be done at your age.

You should be having routine pap smears. If you have spent a lot of time in the sun, you should get a mole check. Routine breast exams and rectal exams should be done with the pap smear. And of course blood tests.

But more invasive things, like mammograms, colonoscopies, etc., are something to do when your are 40ish.

Cancer isn't that common at your age.

There is no such thing as a cancer detection thingy. If you are talking about CT scans or MRI, that's unnecessary, a waste of time and money, and exposes you to radiation, increasing your chance of caner.

The Hypertension Report - Say Goodbye to High Blood Pressure

Breast Cancer Symptoms In Men

When women are faced with the diagnosis of breast cancer, they are taken through a whirlwind of seeing doctors and receiving tests aimed at defeating the cancer. Breast Cancer Symptoms In Men They receive a whole pile of information from their radiation oncologist, their medical oncologist, their breast radiologist, and their breast surgeon. All the focus is on eliminating the cancer. Our detection and treatment of cancer has improved over the years and women are living through the diagnosis of breast cancer, but what about after the cancer is gone. What are the options for women who have undergone a mastectomy or women who had a lumpectomy, but now have breast deformity? Many of these women had options for reconstruction performed at the same time as the mastectomy, but the focus was on killing the cancer. So next time you or someone you know has been diagnosed with breast cancer, please take a moment to reflect about the post-cancer needs of the patient. Ask these questions.

1. Is she a candidate for immediate breast reconstruction? (Reconstruction performed at the time of the mastectomy)

Patients with early stages of breast cancer who are not likely to receive radiation therapy are candidates for immediate reconstruction?

2. What are the advantages of immediate breast reconstruction?

Patients have less scarring and better cosmetic outcomes when the reconstruction is performed at the time of mastectomy. In addition, there is a proven psychologic benefit for patients undergoing immediate breast reconstruction?

3. Does immediate reconstruction delay other necessary treatments like chemotherapy?

Although some patients may have wound still to heal, most published studies demonstrate no difference in the time after surgery that chemotherapy is started whether or not patients undergo immediate reconstruction.

4. Does immediate breast reconstruction increase the chance of breast cancer recurrence?

Immediate reconstruction has no difference in local cancer recurrence from mastectomy alone?

5. Does immediate reconstruction decrease survival?

Patients undergoing mastectomy alone when compared to those receiving immediate breast reconstruction have no difference in the overall survival. Therefore, immediate breast reconstruction is oncologically safe and effective.

6. If she needs radiation therapy and is not a candidate for immediate breast reconstruction, are there options that can hep minimize the scarring?

Lung Cancer Secrets Revealed Click here

Traditionally, all of patients requiring radiation were not offered immediate reconstruction. However, this paradigm is shifting and by working with the radiation oncologist we can place temporary tissue expanders to help keep all the original skin of the breast. Then after your radiation therapy is complete, we can replace the expander with your own tissue with or without an implant to complete your reconstruction. This process is called delayed-immediate breast reconstruction and is a mix between immediate and delayed reconstruction so that we can maintain all your original skin and minimize scarring.

7. What are the latest options for breast reconstruction?

The options for breast reconstruction are usually categorized by implant or autologous (using your body's own tissue) based reconstruction. Implant reconstruction involves the use of a tissue expander (an inflatable implant) to recruit more skin before finally replacing the temporary expander with a silicone or saline implant.

Autologous Reconstruction is most commonly performed from tissue from your abdomen. The deep inferior epigastric artery flap (DIEP Flap) is performed by taking skin and fat from your lower abdomen and preserving ALL the muscle to recreate soft natural breast that will last the test of time. Using microsurgical techniques, your plastic surgeon will recreate the breast gland and shape. In addition, patients benefit from the tummy tuck they receive when the skin and fat from the lower abdomen is removed. Other autologous options include the superficial epigastric artery flaps and flaps taken from the buttocks.

Professor Juanne Clarke has spent her career as a medical sociologist, exploring the public health system and the personal health systems of individuals. One of her book examined how women with breast cancer deal with diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. Then her 17-year-old daughter Lauren was diagnosed with leukemia, and the theories and paradigms of academe gave way to the real-life struggle of a mother and her daughter for healing and for the best medical treatment possible. Finding Strength details two years in the lives of these two women, from early symptoms and denial, through diagnosis and two years of treatment, to a clean bill of health. Each chapter first describes the events of a particular time and then discusses the literature on the subject, relating to their own experience what medical and sociological researches have found. The book also includes an extensive bibliography and a list of resources for childhood cancer.

What is really the symptoms of breast cancer?

I just wanted to know these early signs because I know it would help.

Early breast cancer usually has no symptoms at all. The signs and symptoms of possible breast cancer are:

change in size - one breast may have become noticeably larger or lower

nipple change - if it becomes inverted (pulled in) or changes its position or shape

rash - on or around the nipple

discharge - from one or both nipples

puckering or dimpling - around nipple

swelling – in your armpit or around your collarbone (from lymph nodes)

lump or thickening - that feels different from the rest of the breast tissue - but remember that most breast lumps are not cancerous
